Last Rizla is a band from Hermoupolis, in Greece (on the Island of Syros, in the Cyclades Archipelago). The band started playing in 2003 and, as humorously reported on the myspace page, experienced various line-up changes. The present band’s members are: Greg (drums), Choko (guitar), Zak (vocals) and, last but not least, Kooh (bass).
The demo album was recorded in March 2009 in Thessaloniki, Greece, and was mastered and printed in Athens. It was released just a few days ago (22/10), 1000 copies (cd only) each with slightly different artwork (the band’s members hand-stamped all the packages). It is a self-financed release and the band is unsigned. The band is giving the album for free.

In his e-mail message Kooh says about the band’s musical style: “I won't cope categorizing into a genre - there's a lot of different sounds in there. Well, it's heavy.”
Variety appears to be a constant character of this nice band. Look what they say about their look on myspace!: “The vast majority of the Last Rizla Group members encounter a dispiriting problem of bad, plain bad, haircuts or hairstyles; ranging from total baldness to buddha-looking-chubby-heads, oily-lovelocks to 80s-mane-full-of-shame, disoriented-dreadlocks to yippy-yow-cowlicks, one-bread-all-head to pussy-looking-fluffy-mohawks and weak-afanaz, Last Rizla have made their statement to the world of style! Viva Bad Taste!”

After these due “technical” and “hairstyling” details, let’s move on to the music …
Well, as announced by Kooh, Last Rizla’s sound is definitely heavy and isn’t boring at all! It is truly a melting pot of styles ranging from space-psychedelic rock to fuzzy desert-stoner rock with pinches of doom, hardcore, jazz and even a hint of reggae … So it is quite difficult indeed to give a tag, although the dominant styles are space-psychedelic and heavy desert rock in pure Kyuss style.
The demo contains six tracks whose length varies between four to over nine minutes. The song structures are quite complex as you can get all these different styles into a single track. However the length is adequate to merge the styles quite well. The result is quite dynamic songs where rhythms vary markedly from the slower spacey-psych parts to the faster stoner parts. Some slow parts with strongly distorted and fuzzy guitar sounds and dark, half spoken vocal parts mark occasional “invasions” of the doom realm by this creative band.
The space-psychedelic parts may recall bands like Los Natas or White Hills, although sounds change quite a lot: in certain instances typical space rock sounds give way to parts where an almost jazzy, leading sound of bass is coupled with background reverberating guitars and occasional reggae-like rhythms.
The vocal parts are accordingly variable. Vocal parts are not dominant but just essential and vary from dark, half-spoken to minor hardcore-style shouted (somehow in background), with occasional superposition of the two vocal styles. The effect is nice.
I must say that a character I liked particularly in this excellent demo is the role of the bass. I like it a lot when the bass sound is well heard: I think it helps in giving depth to the sound. I expressed this preference of mine in other occasions (even when dealing with black metal albums …). Here the bass sound is prominent, and I dig it a lot.
And, btw, thumbs up also for the production, guys!

Collapse Under The Empire is an instrumental/post-rock duo from Hamburg / Germany. They formed 2007, when Chris Burda and Matthew Jason got together to develop their own music under the name of Collapse Under The Empire. They both released the first four songs for the EP Paintball in summer 2008.
After that they came up with their self-produced debut album, Systembreakdown, which was recorded in their own studio and saw the light as a digital album of day in spring 2009. The songs were praised by critics and audience alike and brought the young band a lot of attention on the scene.
For the second album the band were signed by the indie label Sister Jack. The new album Find A Place To Be Safe will be out over Cargo Records on Nov. 27th 2009. It was mastered by Michael Schwabe (Einstürzende Neubauten, Die Toten Hosen, Beatsteaks) at Monoposto Studio. The appropriate single Crawling was pre--publicized on Sept. 25th 2009 over Believe Digital.

Isole’s third full length Bliss of Solitude, released last year, was a perfect example of the mediocrity which can often pervade the traditional doom genre. It’s something that plagues any sort of music, but in particular styles, such as doom, there isn’t much of a critical area in which subjectivity flows rampant; dullness and standard composition can be immediately identified and severely hamper a band’s progress. This was the case for Bliss of Solitude, but it goes to show Isole’s determination as a band when they are able to rise up from such a low and come back with something well made, more specifically their fourth album, Silent Ruins.

With the album, Isole have injected something of an excitable energy into their music; it’s instantly appealing, and without making any objective statements about its longevity, is an album that doesn’t become uninteresting quickly. This is due in part to the variation of the album’s mood; although generally falling under such feelings as somber, melancholic or vividly depressing, Isole do not dwell on the same ideas constantly, making huge amounts of headway in dulling the blade of repetitiveness, something that was not so well handled on Bliss of Solitude.

Nevertheless, not even this newfound vigour can completely extricate Isole from past habits; opener ‘From the Dark’ is too long for its own good, and some sections of the album noticeably pale alongside the better tracks. Still, it is a huge step up for Isole and basically returns the band to the former strength they attained with their debut Forevermore.

Although it does well to introduce the energetic stylings of the album, ‘From the Dark’ quickly stagnates and it’s fortunate that the band delivers the two punch combo of ‘Forlorn’ and ‘Nightfall’ immediately after. ‘Forlorn’ is characterized by its slight Middle Eastern flavour, and driven by a flooring flurry of drumming. ‘Nightfall’ is probably the best song on the album; it shows off Daniel Bryntse’s high range, and has a fantastically melancholic chorus which is instantly likeable.

The album’s strength lies in its shorter songs that sit between the two longer tracks, and this is something which Isole will hopefully take note of with future releases. Attempts at sounding ‘epic’ by needlessly lengthening the tracks are ultimately to the album’s disadvantage, and Silent Ruins, particularly the first and last tracks, goes to show how well Isole could do with a little less room for stagnation. ‘Hollow Shrine’ and ‘Soulscarred’ continue on with the solidity of the preceding two tracks; the former has an outstanding intro which weaves in and out of the song to great effect, while the latter is a slow burning, climactic song that ends in a spectacular fashion.

One of the main forces behind Silent Ruins’ appeal is its inventiveness; asides from its collection of catchy and engaging riffage, Isole make sure to deliver well placed and thoughtful solos, shreddy in nature but not at all wanky. Bryntse’s vocals, although being thoroughly well performed, are hugely complemented by the occasional instances of gutturals which come as a huge surprise and work superbly with the album’s overall sound.

As a traditional doom album, Silent Ruins is not anything remarkable. Obviously it hardly matches up to earlier greats, and even in regard to some of the bands associated with the doom revival, such as Doomshine, Isole are somewhat lacking in delivering that complete satisfaction one looks for in such an album. Without a doubt, the mid section of the album is fantastic, but the album’s reliance on simply four songs cannot be overlooked. Silent Ruins is a fun album; one would be hard pressed to find too many things that are wrong with it without getting nitpicky, but seeing as it is the job of this review to be nitpicky, its faults must be announced. At the very least, it’s a hopeful image to see Isole back on track with their music.

Death Magic Doom is the tenth studio album from the Swedish doom metal outfit Candlemass. This is the second album by Candlemass featuring Robert Lowe on vocals (no, not the actor), as opposed to Messiah Marcolin. Death Magic Doom’s release date is April 3 globally, and is under the Nuclear Blast record label.

In the doom metal word today, Candlemass might be king. It is true, doom metal is a bit of a dying breed, but if one band has the ability to change that, Candlemass would be the one. This album is not as much tradition doom/epic doom as their past releases – they have incorporated a lot more elements of standard heavy metal (not a surprise after their last album or their self-titled). This is most definitely not a bad thing. Through the simple addition of more heavy metal styles their music gained so much more power.

Since Robert Lowe stepped in at vocals, it seems, the band has taken a bit heavier sound. It’s unclear whether this is because of Lowe, or because Leif Edling has decided to simply write heavier music (for those who don’t know, Edling does a cast majority of the writing for Candlemass). The only problem is that with the heavier writing, they have forgone some of the more “doom” sounds, and the music has a less dramatically depressed sound (what makes doom metal as awesome as it is). It is clear that this album is the beginning of a new era for Candlemass.

From a production standpoint, this album is spot-on. There are a lot of section with non-standard instruments used, such as a Wurlitzer organ, chimes, bells, etc. Those are the things from epic doom that Candlemass are doing as well as ever. It’s really a tough decision to say whether the vocals from Lowe, however, are better than the vocals from Marcolin. Perhaps technically they are better now, but I’m not sure that anyone could beat the timbre of Marcolin’s voice for doom metal.

For those who are fans of Candlemass, this is a must-have, because they are as good as ever. For those who like heavy metal or doom metal, this is also very much a winner. From top to bottom, there is nothing wrong with this album. The songwriting, production, performance, etc. are all spot-on. Aside from the opening track of the album, though, there are no show-stopping songs on the album.
